What is a power steering pump?

Since we are talking about hydraulic fluid here, which is responsible for the hydraulic power that keeps your car under control on the road. A properly working pump is always important.   What happens is with time, power steering pumps begin to reduce their performance as these aren’t designed to perform ideally lifetime. However, the good news is that your power steering pump will show some symptoms before failing, so you have ample time to call to action between the steering pump and pump failure.

  • Difficulty steering: The steering wheel may become much harder to turn, requiring significantly more effort from the driver. The steering may feel heavy, stiff, or unresponsive, especially at lower speeds.
  • Whining or groaning noises: A malfunctioning power steering pump often produces audible whining, groaning, or whirring noises, especially when turning the steering wheel. The noise may increase in volume as the engine RPM increases.
  • Fluid leaks: Fluid leaks around the power steering pump or in the power steering system lines can indicate a problem with the pump. Drivers may notice a puddle of power steering fluid under the vehicle or low fluid levels in the power steering reservoir.
  • Power steering assistance failure: In severe cases, the power steering pump may fail completely, resulting in a total loss of power steering assist. The steering wheel will become extremely difficult to turn, making the vehicle almost impossible to steer at low speeds.
  • Steering wheel vibration or shaking: A failing power steering pump can cause the steering wheel to vibrate or shake, especially when turning. This is often due to the pump failing to provide consistent pressure and flow to the power steering system.
