I typed in the VIN number for my car and the site says these are compatible, but there's no way - they're half the size of the stock units and don't extend nearly as far. Either these are made for a different part of the car, or maybe they're good for the sedan version, but not the hatchback. Otherwise they seem to be well made, but I'm very disappointed.

Wrong size

I was disappointed in the Tailgate Shock, after installing the tailgate did not perform as expected. When lowering, the tailgate dropped just like if I hadn’t had the shock on the tailgate. I followed the instructions step by step and then I was excited to try the product and the failure of the product. Please recommend the solution how it will perform better.

Though not mentioned or advertised, the new struts do not come with new metal c-clamps. You will need to reuse your old clamps to make the repair. Otherwise, worked perfectly.

Prior to changing the shocks, the trunk was opening until the lid was straight up and down, and stayed there just fine, 
but it closed pretty hard, so I thought the shocks were weak. I ordered the replacements that were recommended for this 2002 Audi model TT and they are 2 inches shorter than the ones I had. As a result, the trunk does not open as far as it did, and they are weaker than the prior ones, so the trunk closes even harder than before.

Based on your description, it appears the lift supports purchased were a "Universal Fit" model rather than the exact direct-fit OEM replacements for the 2002 Audi TT. Universal supports have a generalized length and gas pressure rating, which explains why they are 2 inches shorter and do not have the specific lifting force required to hold up the heavy trunk lid of your Audi.
