What is a wear sensor on brake pads?

How does the brake pad wear sensor work?

When the brake pad wears down to a certain point, the metal tab or wire will make contact with the brake rotor, creating an electrical circuit that triggers a warning light on the dashboard of the car. 

The warning light is usually a red circle with an exclamation point in the center, and it may also say "Brake" or "Brake Pad Wear" on it. When the warning light comes on, it is important to have the brake pads replaced as soon as possible to ensure that the brakes continue to work effectively and safely.

Do all cars have a brake wear sensor？

No, not every car is equipped with a brake wear indicator on it. Generally speaking, the presence of a brake pad wear sensor can depend on the make and model of the car, as well as the year it was manufactured. For some newer cars, especially luxury vehicles, brake pad wear indicator is a standard feature. Some entry-level and budget-friendly vehicles, however, may not have this device.

Brake pad wear sensor replacement

Then remove the old sensor by employing some tools. And you are ready to install the new brake wear indicator. Don’t forget to reconnect the electrical connector to test the new wear sensor and ensure that the warning light on the dashboard goes out. If you are not comfortable performing the replacement yourself, it is recommended to have a qualified mechanic do the job.
